Summer is a season for sunshine, adventure, and family—but it’s also a good time to pause and ask:
Is your estate plan still working for you?
At WG Law, we see it every year—clients preparing for summer trips, enrolling kids in summer programs, or checking off financial goals before the fall rush. It's the perfect window to revisit your estate plan and make sure everything is current, especially if it's been a while since your last review.
So before you pack your bags or start your road trip playlist, take 10 minutes for a simple but important check-in. Here’s your 3-step summer estate plan refresh:
Step 1: Update Your Will and Powers of Attorney
Life changes fast. If you’ve had a new child, moved, gone through a divorce, or experienced a loss, your current will may not reflect your true wishes. The same goes for your Medical Power of Attorney or Durable Power of Attorney—documents that ensure the right person can step in if you’re ever unable to make decisions for yourself.
Pro tip: Your POA should always reflect someone you trust completely, and who is easily reachable in case of emergency.
Step 2: Review Your Guardianship Plan
If you have minor children or care for an adult with special needs, your guardianship designations are one of the most important parts of your plan. Are the people you originally named still the best fit? Are they still willing and able?
Guardianship plans should grow with your family. If you haven’t looked at yours in a few years, now’s the time.
Step 3: Title Assets to Your Trust
If you have a revocable living trust, remember: it only works if your assets are titled correctly. This includes your home, bank accounts, investment accounts, and even business interests. Assets that are not properly titled may still go through probate—even if you have a trust.
Think of your trust like a suitcase. If your assets aren’t packed inside, they can’t travel smoothly.
Peace of Mind Starts with a Simple Step
We believe summer should feel light and free—not weighed down by legal stress or unanswered questions.
Our Estate Plan Intake Form makes it easy to get started. In just a few clicks, you can tell us where you’re at, what you need, and how we can help. From there, we’ll follow up with a consultation tailored to your goals.
Estate planning isn’t just for the end of life—it’s for all the moments in between. Whether you're hopping on a plane, hitting the lake, or staying local this summer, the peace of mind that comes from knowing your affairs are in order is worth every second.
